Interleukin 31 (IL31) is a proinflammatory cytokine primarily produced by activated CD4+ T cells, particularly Th2 cells. It belongs to the gp130/IL-6 cytokine family but uniquely does not utilize the gp130 receptor. Instead, IL-31 signals through a heterodimeric receptor complex composed of IL-31 receptor A (IL31RA) and oncostatin M receptor (OSMR), activating multiple intracellular pathways, including JAK/STAT, MAPK, and PI3K/AKT. These signaling cascades are involved in various physiological responses, such as immune regulation and inflammation. IL-31 is implicated in several diseases, notably allergic conditions like atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis, as well as in cardiovascular issues such as Kawasaki disease and dilated cardiomyopathy. |
