Serine protease 22 (PRSS22), also known as brain-specific serine protease 4 or tryptase epsilon, is a secreted trypsin-like serine endopeptidase belonging to the S1 family. It is primarily expressed in the airway epithelium and other tissues such as the esophagus and pancreas, where it contributes to proteolysis and extracellular matrix remodeling. PRSS22 exhibits serine-type endopeptidase and peptidase activator activities, influencing signaling pathways including PI3K and p53. Clinically, PRSS22 is significantly dysregulated in various malignancies, particularly colorectal cancer, where its upregulation in primary tumors and lymph nodes serves as a prognostic biomarker for recurrence and reduced survival. Its involvement in tumorigenesis and immune microenvironment modulation makes it a potential therapeutic target. |
