| 背景信息 | Betacellulin (BTC) is a protein belonging to the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family, encoded by the BTC gene. It functions as a ligand for the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including the differentiation of pancreatic β-cells, neural stem cell proliferation, and retinal vascular permeability. BTC is synthesized as a transmembrane precursor that is processed to a mature molecule by proteolytic events, resulting in a soluble form that can bind and activate ErbB receptors. The protein is associated with several diseases, notably type 2 diabetes and squamous cell carcinoma, and has been explored in gene therapy to address metabolic issues in diabetic models. BTC's molecular functions include growth factor activity, phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase activity, and protein tyrosine kinase activity. |
