It functions as an electrogenic antiporter that utilizes the proton gradient across the synaptic vesicle membrane to exchange two intravesicular protons for one molecule of acetylcholine or choline. This process ensures the efficient loading and storage of acetylcholine into secretory vesicles for regulated release at the synapse. SLC18A3 is highly expressed in cholinergic neurons within the hippocampus, basal ganglia, and spinal cord. By controlling the availability of acetylcholine for exocytosis, it plays a fundamental role in mediating cognitive functions, motor control, and autonomic nervous system signaling. |
