It represents a non-functional copy of genes within the solute carrier family 19, which typically encodes transporters for essential micronutrients such as folate and thiamine. While functional members of this family, such as SLC19A1 and SLC19A2, possess twelve transmembrane domains and are widely expressed in the liver, kidney, and placenta, SLC19A4P has accumulated mutations that prevent normal gene expression and protein synthesis. Consequently, it lacks the capacity to facilitate cellular transport. Although it retains sequence homology to its functional counterparts, there is currently no established physiological or clinical role for this pseudogene in human disease. |
