| 背景信息 | Autophagy related 4A cysteine peptidase (ATG4A) is a key enzyme in the autophagy process, playing a crucial role in both proteolytic activation and delipidation of ATG8 family proteins. It is a 50 kDa cytosolic cysteine protease predominantly expressed in skeletal muscle and brain. ATG4A primarily cleaves GATE-16 but can also process other mammalian Atg8 homologues with lower efficiency. The protein is involved in regulating human erythroid maturation and mitochondrial clearance. Overexpression of ATG4A has been shown to promote autophagy and proliferation while inhibiting apoptosis in lens epithelial cells via the AMPK and Akt pathways. This suggests a potential role for ATG4A in lens degradation and cataract formation. Additionally, ATG4A has been associated with neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation. |
