It specifically binds to the EDA-A2 isoform of ectodysplasin, which is essential for the formation and maintenance of various ectodermal structures, including hair follicles, teeth, and sweat glands. EDA2R activates intracellular signaling pathways, notably the NF-κB and JNK pathways, through interactions with adaptor proteins such as TRAF3 and TRAF6. Dysregulation or mutations in the EDA2R gene are associated with X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, a condition characterized by sparse hair, missing teeth, and reduced sweating due to impaired ectodermal development.
