| 背景信息 | Complement C3 (C3) is a critical protein in the immune system, primarily involved in the complement cascade, which enhances the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear pathogens. C3 is synthesized mainly in the liver and is the most abundant complement protein in serum. Upon activation, C3 is cleaved into C3a and C3b; C3b acts as an opsonin, marking pathogens for destruction, while C3a promotes inflammation. Deficiencies in C3 can lead to severe immunocompromised states, increasing susceptibility to bacterial infections and autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and glomerulonephritis. Elevated C3 levels are often seen in inflammatory conditions, including infections and certain malignancies. The dual role of C3 in both promoting immune responses and its involvement in pathological conditions underscores its significance in health and disease. |
